Salerno overview

There are many firsts that Italy is famous for and Salerno is no exception as it is the birthplace of the world's first medical school, which made Salerno an important centre for art and education in the southwest of Italy. The city of Salerno has benefitted greatly from its location in the centre of the tourist triangle of Pompei, Paestum, and Positano, but Salerno has plenty of its own sights that are well worth a visit. The Lungomare Trieste is a five-mile-long promenade, which is known as one of the best in the region and has many examples of rare palm trees. The downtown area of Salerno is thought to be one of the best maintained in Italy and the city still revolves around the ancient market at its centre. If you aren't yet sick of churches, Salerno has several famous ones.
