Varese overview

Situated up near the Swiss border in northern Lombardy, Varese is a popular stop off for those travelling between Milan and Zurich. It is a quaint, old town with squares and churches galore and is especially popular with lovers of the outdoors. Varese is, in fact, touted as the land of lakes, on account of the many surrounding bodies of water, and there are all sorts of activities on offer on the water and in the surrounding mountains. Its collection of churches and basilicas also makes it an important destination for pilgrims, with the UNESCO Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte being particularly popular. Milan’s Malpensa International Airport is the most convenient point of entry.
