Venice overview

Contrary to popular belief, Venice is not a flooded city; it is a unique centre spread across a series of over 100 islands with a series of waterways separating them. This traffic-free entity remains one of the world’s most visited places and truly is romantic. It throngs with tourists year-round, yet this does not detract significantly from Venice’s beauty and it retains its centuries-old character. Sure, San Marco Square is very over-the-top and sports more snap-happy tourists than pigeons, but take a walk along the banks of any canal, or indeed a gondola ride, and you can find yourself alone admiring the ancient architecture. Planes and trains terminate outside the watery part of Venice.
